The Mercury is Rising...

Finally! Summer has arrived here in the Pacific Northwest. As people here flock to the water to stay cool, we wanted remind everyone, wherever you may be, how important it is to stay hydrated when the temperatures rise.
It just so happens that one of the safest and easiest ways to keep hydrated is the SIGG bottle, available at Fashion Ethic. It is BPA-free, lightweight, and keeps your water cooler than a plastic water bottle, which can also leach dangerous chemicals into your water.

SIGGS are hard to find these days...ever since Oprah and Julia Roberts talked them up on O's "Favorite Green Things" episode, the company has had a hard time filling orders. It just so happens that it's been one of our favorite things since last year and our stock is running low. So grab one while you can and make your life easier with the SIGG BOTTLE CLEAN tablets - just drop one in and it effervesces it clean...very effective as long as you've just been keeping water in there!

Who Wants to be an Eco Depot?

Home Depot and Office Depot may not be related in the corporate sense, but they both want to help you recycle items that are often hard to (ethically) dispose of, and that's not all bad!

Home Depot Can Help you recycle your dead CFL bulbs. If you're like me, you're thinking "What! I still haven't had one burn out...isn't that the point of CFLs?!" But in any case, the bulbs can't last forever and contain small levels of mercury, which we really don't want in our landfills or drinking water. So for any of you who insisted on keeping up with the old incandescent bulbs because of mercury-in-the-landfills fear, rejoice! Now when your CFL bulbs burn out, just take them to the returns counter at your nearest Home Depot (there are nearly 2,000 in the US) and they will be "managed responsibly by an environmental management company who will coordinate CFL packaging, transportation and recycling to maximize safety and ensure environmental compliance"...phew! In addition, Home Depot is phasing out traditional bulbs in their lighting departments in favor of CFLs.

Office Depot is Taking Care of recycling your old electronics. This Depot has long supported recycling printer cartridges and using recycled paper, but now they also offer "Tech Recycling Services," including 3 sizes of boxes you buy ($5-15) and stuff full of accepted products like printers, monitors, cell phones, VCRs, etc which, if thrown away, would leak dangerous chemicals into the earth. Again, just bring your items in the box to any Office Depot and walk away free from eco guilt!

Now I just wonder which one will lay claim to the term Eco Depot first...maybe I should trademark it, stat! ;)

Savior for Summertime Soles

For feet suitable for sandal wearing, or for feet that have already seen too much summer wear and tear, you must, MUST try the Bien Ella "PediCure" Scrub.

While I have long been a fan of any-type-of-scrub-other-than-foot-scrubs, Bien Ella has brought me full circle with their fabulous pumice-based, not-pepperminty, completely all-natural scrub that leaves mes pieds gently exfoliated and soft as the dickens. And I won't lie, this scrub has found it's way up my calves and on the elbows as well. I mean, it is HARD to find truly all natural scrubs, not tested on animals, that don't smell like a patchouli patch, but Bien Ella has done it!

The scrub comes complete with a pair of exfoliating gloves and the ingredients include Kokum butter, Organic Coconut and Avocado Oils, Pumice, Grapefruit Seed Extract, and other essential oils. That's it! No drying glycerin, dangerous parabens or ocean-damaging plastic beads, just all natural ingredients that will leave your feet feeling divine and our water sources safe.

For proof, see the before and after photos sent over by the lovely Lynnel at Bien Ella. Now, which would you rather sport all summer long? That's what we thought...Shop for it HERE.

Can't Stand the Heat? Just Beat It.

Even though we're breaking record LOW temperature records in the cloud-covered Pacific Northwest, we here at Fashion Ethic are (enviously) aware that many of you are experiencing what we fondly remember as sweltering Summer weather.

Check Out Eco-Fashion Month at Grechen's Closet

If you haven't heard of GrechensCloset.com, you best get over to this useful site and check it out. After running a successful blog/shopping directory/discount code resource/apparel review site for quite some time, Grechen has increasingly been moving her site toward the realm of eco fashion.

Just as most Fashionably Responsible consumers do, she started with small eco steps here and there, and has gone full force, declaring June "Eco-Month" at GrechensCloset.com. So head on over for interviews with eco designers and retailers (including yours truly) and recent reviews of green fashion items galore, including the new 100% certified organic cotton SPUN line (available in entirety only here at Fashion Ethic), and her review of the Sublet "Anais" cardigan and Peligrosa 3-fold cami back on June 5th, as pictured.

Fashion Ethic Meets Nick Verreos

Candice here. So I just got back from a party here in Seattle where the very amiable Nick Verreos from Project Runway fame was helping raise some funds for charity by auctioning off some of his original designs. It is always encouraging to see designers doing what they can to raise awareness about issues or raise funds to support things they care about. Events like this, designers giving back to community organizationa, and all CFDA has done to fight AIDS, are things that make me proud to be part of the fashion industry.

Speaking of giving money back to community, pictured on the left here is Sara Seumae, designer of SPUN, a 100% certified organic cotton line available at FashionEthic.com. Her line is part of 1% For the Planet, donating 1% of revenue to environmental causes. That's me on the right in the Ryann dress (which, by the way, Nick said he noticed as soon as I came in due to the fab cutouts...and yes, it can be yours on sale right now at FashionEthic.com ;) We flank the lovely Nick Verreos, who is wearing the greatest shawl neck cardigan from Philip Lim, which, while not at Fashion Ethic is somewhat similar to a SPUN piece coming this Fall. Quite the coincidence! You heard it here first!

Treat Dad Right for Father's Day

Fashion Ethic hasn't forgotten Dad this Father's Day. Whether you're shopping for "Dear Old Dad" or the hubby, there's a Fashionably Responsible item or two to be found online.

This brilliant Space Invaders tee from Peligrosa is 100% organic cotton and hand-dyed with natural dyes, so no chemicals are involved. Keep him safe while he sports his gamer style. And it's not just for the Grand Theft Auto 4-playing retro set - I still remember watching my dad teaching me how to play Space Invaders back when we were all learning just what Atari was. Aren't we all a little nostalgic for simpler video game days?

And don't forget the SIGG! SIGG bottles are flying off the shelves as more and more people become aware of the dangers of plastic bottles (PET, pthtalates, and the ilk disrupt human endocrine systems, and yes, they leach into foods and liquids from certain plastic containers). Not to mention that dad can save some $$$ by refilling his safe coated aluminum bottle, which keeps water and other cold beverages cooler throughout the day. Available for just $22 in sport black or sport blue with "active touch" exterior. Toss in some SIGG CLEAN tablets, which offer no-scrub effervescing cleaning action - all he has to do is fill the bottle with warm water, drop in a tablet, and wait just 20 minutes before rinsing out. Even Dad can handle that!

Last, but not least, celebrate Dad with a sweet product founded by two dads out of their love of their children (and their sweet tooth). Yummy Earth lollipops and candy drops are Organic, kosher, and don't have any high fructose corn syrup, GMOs (genetically modified organisms), nuts, soy, or other allergans. Flavors are real - never artificial, and taste better than anything else we've tried. (We think Dads will especially enjoy "Hot Chili" pops) A bag will run you $4, easy on the wallet but if it's the thought that counts, this is a gift still chock full of flavor and love.

In fact, we think Dads are so cool, we're offering a special discount for Father's Day - use code DAD15 at checkout for 15% off your order (we won't tell if you happen to pick something up for yourself as well ;) ). But be sure to order before Noon PST Weds JUNE 11 for Father's Day delivery! (code expires June 11)

Mourning the Passing of Yves Saint Laurent

The fashion flag flies at half mast today for one of our favorite designers, Yves Saint Laurent, who passed away today at the age of 71.

As one of the most influential designers of the past century, Saint Laurent will be remembered for essentially inventing ready to wear designer clothing, creating dead sexy looks like "le smoking" (think the original "Addicted to Love" video girls in impeccably tailored suits), and his expert use of color.

Retired since 2002, Yves Saint Laurent continued to influence fashion and you can be sure he will be on designers minds' as they think about Spring and Fall 2009.
Much missed already, YSL.
