How Safe Are Your Cosmetics?

We found this fantastic resource online - the "Skin Deep" database brought to you by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the Environmental Working Group. Just search for your favorite lipstick, shampoo, fragrance, or any cosmetic product and quickly see how your product rates on the safety assessment scale of 1 to 10. And, if you're like us and discover your lipstick is a 7 (containing nasties like formaldahyde), you can reverse search any category by rating and find a new favorite lippy with much friendlier ingredients. Fair warning - this site is mildly addictive and more than a little disturbing!

While you're at the site, don't forget to sign the petition to Congress, calling for more stringent guidelines for cosmetic ingredient use and labelling. According to the EWG, a full 89% of ingredients have not been fully tested for safety. Some of those have been banned in the European Union, but are still commonly used here in the States.

At Fashion Ethic we continue to sample fantastic cosmetic and beauty lines in our quest to bring you the very best safe, effective, and luxe products this Spring. In case you hadn't heard, we are really excited about the Tsi-La Organics perfume set available at our shop right now...synthetic-free and organic scents you can mix and match!

Emily Katz now available at Fashion Ethic

Designer Emily Katz is based in Portland, Oregon - a beautiful and bustling American city nestled among rivers, valleys, and mountains and not too far from the Pacific Coast. Recently featured in NYLON Magazine, Katz also has a background in Fine Arts, including making her own music and artwork. Is it any wonder then that she imbues her clothes with a distinctive "elegant, but practical" look and uses eco-conscious sustainable and organic fabrics?

At Fashion Ethic, we love the recycled poly/hemp denim "Perfect Trench," which features a flirty skirt and tie belt and the 100% organic cotton fleece "Super Cowl" tunic, with on-seam pockets, fabulous cowl neck, and attached tie belt. All pieces are made in the USA, ensuring fair labor and fair wages. And that just makes these pieces all the more easy to fall in love with.

Congrats to Tsi-La Organics Perfume!

Our favorite organic perfumery, Tsi-La Organics, have been awarded an MVP award from Redbook magazine's "Best Beauty Booty of 2007" list. Congrats to Annie and Natalie, the creators of this fantastic all-natural, hand-blended line of organic perfume.

Their four-bottle mini set of scents is also featured in January's ELLE Magazine - the one with the fabulous Victoria (Posh) Beckham on the cover. And of course it is available at Fashion Ethic right now!

Fashion Ethic Preparing to "Soft-Launch"

The Holiday Preview of is expected this weekend and we can't wait to share with you all the amazing Fashionably Responsible designers and products we have found!

We have soft 100% bamboo shawls, scarves, and armwarmers, gorgeous hand-dyed casmere from Peligrosa Knits, sustainable sparkle for the holidays in silk/hemp tops from Ryann, one-of-a-kind recycled jewelry from Recycled Rings and Entangles, fantastic lightweight (but warm!) fleece pieces from NatureVsFuture, and flirty are-you-sure-that-is-green?! tops, tunics, and dresses from Sustainable Collective.

I'm dying to get this pre-launch shopping site up for everyone to check out. We are so, so close. (You know...we thought we were going with the leader in shopping cart technology, but with all the snags we've hit with it, I'm not so sure there is such a thing!)

More tomorrow!
