Kenneth Cole Supporting Gulf Clean Up Efforts

Fashion's godfather of consciousness, Kenneth Cole, has opened a T-shirt shop on Facebook with 100% of net profits going to oil clean up efforts in the Gulf of Mexico.

The shirts feature witty messages reminiscent of Kenneth Cole's famous slogan-oriented advertising, known as "Kennethisms". These phrases include a few Gulf-related comments, such as "I Clean Up Well," as well as well-known Kennethisms like "Today Is Not a Dress Rehearsal". For $35, you choose the color of T (everything from basic black to bright purple), graphic, and slogan. Proceeds go to WEARABLE, The Kenneth Cole Foundation to support the Gulf clean up through July of this year.

InSpa Creates a 'Fashionably Responsible' Pedicure

Last week, I was lucky enough to test out a new water-efficient pedicure that will soon be offered at InSpa, a chain of day spas in Washington and California.

Today, about 8 gallons of water are used for the service and sanitation of each traditional 'tub-soak' pedicure. InSpa figures that this adds up to about 2,200 gallons of water a day across their eleven stores, not to mention the fact that chemicals must be used to sanitize tubs after each service. Can you imagine how much water all the spas in America are using each day?

InSpa prides themselves on being innovative and eco-minded, so while looking to reduce their ecological footprint, they started working on a new pedicure that not only eliminates a large consumption of water, but also reduces the risks associated with water-borne bacteria.

So how do they do it? Gone is the huge tub of water for soaking. The new treatment uses steamed towels to wrap your feet and soften the skin. The result is something akin to the hot towel on a first-class flight or a nice blanket straight from the dryer, except your feet are the ones bundled and kept nice and warm, while the steam does it's job. The foot rub and massage are relaxing and indulgent, and the polish at the end is the icing on the cake. I really did prefer the towel method to the traditional foot soak - it seems much cleaner and actually more comfortable since you aren't getting wet.

Kudos to InSpa for this "Fashionably Responsible" update to a traditional service. We hope other spas and nail salons will follow your example and help save one of earth's most precious resources...while still providing a stylish fix.

The Earth Awards Seeks Sustainable Innovations

There are just a few more days to get your entry in for The Earth Awards 2010. With a selection committee made up of innovators like Richard Branson, Graydon Carter, Jane Goodall, Philippe Starck, and Diane von Furstenberg, The Earth Awards showcase innovative and SUSTAINABLE design in six categories: Fashion, Products, Systems, Built Environment, Future, and Social Justice.

Entries are judged based on their sustainability factor. They must be Ecological, Original, Measurable, Achievable, Useful, and Scalable. Last year, FAB.REcology by Neri Oxman took the grand prize. These organic forms adjust to their environment, as seen in this fantastic video.

Submissions are welcome through May 10, 2010 and the Awards gala is set for September 16th in London, along with a fabulous exhibition of sustainable design and a Sustainable Business Conference.

Do we love the fact that the colors come in shades named "Peyote" "Roadie" and "Trip"? ...Well, no, not so much. It's a little hippie-dippie, frankly. Fashion Ethic Celebrates World AIDS Day

Today, December 1st, is World AIDS Day. FashionEthic.com is nearly two years old. But this company was an idea many months in the works, with inspiration pushing from all sorts of amazing places.

Not least of which was the US launch of Product (RED) and JoinRed.com. The campaign was geared toward kick-starting corporate donations to The Global Fund, which provides vaccines and treatments for preventable and treatable diseases including AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. Product (RED) allows consumers to know they are supporting companies that are giving to a cause they believe in, while still being able to purchase products that meet their needs.

The idea that conscious consumers would seek out companies making responsible choices, combined with my love for fashion, wardrobe styling, and sustainability led to the founding of Fashion Ethic, built on the idea of connecting customers with companies making "Fashionably Responsible" choices.

Fashion Ethic has come far. But today I am more impressed with how far World AIDS Day and the (RED) Campaign have come in educating people around the world on the challenges faced - and overcome - in some of the nations hardest hit by the AIDS crisis.

Back before Fashion Ethic, I used to mark this day by sending a mass email to everyone I knew, including some dire stats and stories and making the plea for donations to The Global Fund. Today, I will be able to make RED posts on Twitter, speaking to thousands in one moment. I can pass along the short, but effective messages coming from supporting organizations like ONE. I will share the amazing video on Fashion Ethic's YouTube channel and here that shows HOPE and SUCCESS.

Gone are the days of dire predictions - now we can see results and even huge wins in the fight agains AIDS. What better message could you share in this holiday season?

Sneak Peek! Our Picks from the 2009 Goodwill Glitter Sale

Last night, we had the opportunity to get a sneak peek at the vast room that houses Seattle Goodwill's amazing Glitter Sale, set to open Saturday November 14th at 9am. Racks upon racks of vintage, designer, and premium label dresses, coats, hats, shoes, and jewelry beckon you in to the very large space where the sale is set.

^The formalwear offering is formidable - this is just one aisle, all arranged by color

^And the shoe selection is sure to set your heart aflutter. Here, just the pinks and reds!

Here, for your style pleasure, are some of Fashion Ethic's favorite picks from the immense offering. (Please excuse the blurry cell phone pics!)

Betsy McFeely from Goodwill and Tracy Schneider (aka @GlitterSale_Gal on Twitter) were our hostesses last night and you can tell they love their job.

And what a job it is! Tracy made sure we didn't miss the vintage Courreges, Cassini, and an amazing 3 piece maribou ensemble by Mr. Blackwell. She's been tracking her favorites over at the Glitter Sale Blog. Apparently nearly 200 volunteers help make this sale possible; "as you might imagine, it’s quite an undertaking!" says Tracy. I for one appreciate the display by color, and the "Purple 'Red Hats' Clothes" rack made me smile. These ladies know their customer base, no matter what the age!

But it gets better! All proceeds from the sale go to Goodwill programs. Betsy says,

“Last year, Seattle Goodwill’s job training and education programs served more than 2,700 people in the community. Because of the economy, more people than ever are coming to Goodwill. We’re seeing a greater demand in service, both from people who are unemployed and looking for work, as well as from people who are afraid they may lose their job and want to improve their skills.”

All That Glitters: How Goodwill's Glitter Sale can be your Goldmine

Atten-hut! Soldiers of the style army, unite this weekend at the Seattle Goodwill GLITTER SALE, the amazing formalwear and vintage apparel, accessories, and jewelry sale - where pieces are rare and prices are astoundingly low.

For 26 years, the Seattle Goodwill has been showcasing the 'best of the best' from their donation bins in a no-holds-barred, all-out style bonanza: the famous Glitter Sale. This isn't just a goldmine of vintage and barely-worn designer and formal wear, it's also a goldmine for the community.

Goodwill Industries is best known for their free job training and education programs in the community. Last year, they helped more than 2,200 people get the skills they need to prepare for work. Your donations and purchases at the network of Goodwill thrift stores and the Glitter Sale will support their continued efforts in our community.

Last week, the Glitter Sale 'buzz' kicked off in style at the 2nd Annual Glitter Gala at the downtown Sheraton hotel. This event is a favorite around town, as it is the first chance to see some of the merchandise that will be for sale this weekend. We caught up with Darnell Sue, co-founder of Girl Power Hour and this year's Glitter Gala MC. She raved about the fashion show put on by local Art Institute students and said, "There were several pieces I had my eye on...I was delighted to see so many guests dressed in their best and everyone seemed to be having a fabulous time."

Blog Action Day 09: Climate Change

Today marks Blog Action Day 2009, when blogs around the world highlight an important global topic. This year the focus is Climate Change. If you're a regular reader or shopper at Fashion Ethic, then you know the skinny: Experts believe that the human impact on the planet earth extends to the increase in global warming, and not in a good way.

Now is the time for us to act and innovate before we travel too far down the path of no return.

So what can one person do? Beyond reduce, reuse, recycle, today is the day to get VOCAL. The most vital thing you can do right now is TELL someone about climate change, not least of which includes asking the US Government to address the issue. The Blog Action Day website has an easy click-and-sign page that then allows you to spread the word to your Facebook and Twitter friends.

Problem-solving is best achieved through dialogue and dialogue can't happen when you don't speak up! So tell a friend, tell a colleague, or tell a family member that climate change is an important issue.

TAKE Action and Sign the Petition to ask President Obama to put the US at the forefront of climate change leadership in Copenhagen this December.

Fashionably Responsible and Lavishly Eco

Last night was Seattle's 2nd Annual Eco Lavish fashion show, conceived by Courtney Russell and her Half Past Lavish event production team. The show was held at Georgetown Studios, in a great space that was sparsely and stylishly decked out in white and set aglow by hot pink lighting.

The fashion show featured four local designers with diverse offerings. Renee Corrick's Six Degrees collection opened the show with well tailored cocktail dressing in modern shapes and sustainable hemp/silk blends. Deco Modiste showed vintagey-looks employing reworked fabrics, and Texture Clothing offered up casual knits.

The much-anticipated finale was Lizzie Parker's collection of bespoke holiday dresses for 2009. In her typical pulling-no-punches style, Lizzie showed dresses in various lengths and shapes to suit women of all ages and body types, as well as all confidence levels. The show ended with a flourish as a model wearing a subtley tie-dyed gown topped with a dramatically-hooded cropped hemp silk capelet walked the runway with 'shop dog' Angus. Employing eco fabrics like hemp silk, organic cotton, and her signature bamboo jersey, the bespoke collection marks the first time Parker has delved into remnants, including a dazzling beaded mesh and some sequin trim. Now you can have your glimmer and eco, too!

Each dress will be available in the designer's Eco Atelier in Issaquah's Gilman Village this season, made-to-order in your choice of materials and color. Love the bubble-skirted grommet-back cocktail dress, but prefer the bodice in a color other than purple? Your wish is her command. This bespoke approach marks a return to the days of fashion yore; an approach that helps reduce waste while ultimately creating greater connections between designer and customer.

And what could be more Fashionably Responsible(tm) than that?

Review is in: Leanne Marshall Project Runway Collection

Now that the complete Leanne Marshall Project Runway collection has been made available on Bluefly, we can share more specifics on the manufacturing and textile composition. Happily, the line has been manufactured in the USA, which is a huge plus.

However, the tencel/rayon blends with silk lining are Dry Clean only and not as eco-friendly as a bamboo/organic cotton blend, which many lines (including Sublet and Ryann) use successfully for a beautiful drape. As for the pieces, other than the gorgeous (and not-realy-eco) blue gown we showed you yesterday, the standout of the bunch would have to be the 100% bamboo jacket (above). It is machine wash and styled to be worn in different ways, but we really wish it was done in a bold color in addition to basic khaki.

Last week, we received word that Project Runway Season 5 Winner Leanne Marshall's mini collection for Bluefly will be available on their site starting tomorrow, July 8th. Here, we've been following Marshall and her LeAnimal line of "Fashionably Responsible" apparel for several years, even before launching Fashion Ethic in 2007 and really appreciate her rise in the industry as she continues to promote ethical fashion.

Marshall's collection will include seven styles: 2 tops, a skirt, jacket, and 3 different dresses in crisp blues, pinks, and purples. From the looks of it, expect more of the dramatic textile manipulation and soft architectural shapes that we have come to adore from this pioneering eco-fashion designer. Prices are said to range from $98-990, and eco-friendly materials and dyes have been used in most of the garments (the blue dress is unfortunately not bamboo or tencel. No word yet on the labor used.

This week marks the Independent Handbag Designer Awards in NYC. We are anxious to hear the winners of the Fan Favorite awards in Best Green Handbag and Best Socially Responsible Handbag on June 17th, and will bring it straight to the Fashion Ethic blog when results are posted online!

For now, sneak a peek at the finalists for Fan Favorite. We are fans of ALL these great lines, but have to admit we're leaning towards the fabulous hand-finished DRES handbag by Andres Stickney (L)that makes recycled tires, hemp webbing, and an old door pull look tres chic and the fun Angel Jackson by Katie Smith "Jack Satchel" (R) which uses by-product snakeskin and fair labor in Bali, with strong support of schooling programs in both Bali and India.

Fashionably Responsible Profile: Neenah Funk

Meet Seattle Pacific University fashion design student, Neenah Funk. Her recent entry in the fashion program's annual fashion show caught our eye as a strong commentary on the fashion industry and the need for "Fashionably Responsible" fashion reporting.

The SPU Fashion Show, "The Light Unveiled," included pieces that were inspired by different decades and their characteristic social movements. Fellow SPU student and show producer, Carly Holtzinger, asked Neenah to create a garment for the 2000 decade segment, which inspired her to focus on technological advancements in media and their effect on women's body image. Neenah says these "digitally perfected, unnatural images" are now the norm for what women aspire to, and her dress "speaks to the distorted body image many women in the 21st century have because of this dark, dangerous, veil of technological distortion the media puts over their eyes."

Designing the fabric from scratch, Neenah used actual magazine covers, printing them onto transfer paper and then arranging them in a collage on a white cotton poplin. The collage symobolizes "the confusion the magazine covers create in womens' confidence" while the chain represents the pressure women feel to stay rail thin and the tulle ribbon veil emphasizes the effect of trusting in distorted images.

Neenah just finished her Sophomore year at SPU and is already shaping up to be a force in creating a more responsible fashion industry. Keep an eye on this rising star!

Doucette Duvall Sample Sales in NYC

One of our favorite eco fashion lines is Doucette Duvall, designed by Stephanie Doucette and Annebet Duvall. This collection shares Fashion Ethic's vision of building on an ideal of social responsibility with a distinct emphasis on FASHION.

Doucette Duvall designs have graced the pages of Vogue, hit the red carpet on celebrities like Liv Tyler and Eva Mendes, and even made their big screen debut in the Sex and the City movie. The line is manufactured in New York City's historic garment district, using pre-existing fabric and trim. Each collection features a "little green dress," with a portion of the proceeds from the lgd donated to the non-profit group, Build it Green.

The First Lady Gets "Fashionably Responsible" in the Garden

We love that the First Lady joined White House chefs and kids from a local elementary school today as ground was broken on the first White House Kitchen Garden on the South Lawn.

This project will provide fresh grown, organic produce and herbs for the White House Kitchen as well as donations to Miriam's Kitchen, a local DC soup kitchen.

And we can't help but mention how fabulous Mrs. Obama looked with her belted cowl sweaterdress, tights, and slick boots. Talk about being "Fashionably Responsible"...the First Lady set just the right tone as she broke ground and talked up the health benefits of fresh produce (not to mention eating local!)

December 1st 2008 marks the 20th Anniversary of World AIDS Day. The day is meant not only for remembrance and awareness about the epidemic, but also to celebrate the progress which has been made.

One of the major issues is agencies' commitments toward providing universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support by 2010. This is a vital promise, because drugs to manage AIDS may be readily available in Western countries, but had been quite difficult to find in developing countries, where the virus has ravaged entire towns. Progress has been made, along with increased education.

One of our favorite groups working to curb the spread of AIDS around the world is The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. As of mid-2008, with the fund's resources...

1,750,000 million people are receiving antiretroviral treatment

46 million HIV counseling and testing sessions were conducted

2.8 million orphans were provided with medical services, education and community care

Goodwill Glitter Gala & Recycled Fashion Show

Last night was the Glitter Gala - the benefit and preview for this weekend's famous Glitter Sale at Seattle's Goodwill Thrift Shop.

The highlight of the evening was certainly the fashion show: “Past, Present and Future”, which was a collaboration between Seattle Goodwill, the Seattle Art Institute and Robert Leonard Salon and Day Spa. We LOVE the looks pictured at right, and not just because they're black and white (our signature colors). These garments are proof that a great cut never goes out of style.

I read a PR blog about how fashionistas are turning into "recessionistas" and hitting up H&M, Forever 21, Target, and the ilk to get their fix without spending a ton of money. At the same time I'm reading tons of Blog Action Day posts about fighting poverty. Hmmm...

So I sincerely hope my fellow fashionistas won't start sacrificing quality just to have MORE of something. Especially when it's not only the quality of your clothing, but quite probably the quality of life of the person who makes that clothing.

Check out any "best dressed" list and you will find women who have developed a personal style based on quality wardrobe staples and not fly-by-night trendiness that falls apart. And the Fashionably Responsible best-dressed woman knows to look for clothing that is ethically produced while she's at it.

There's a lot of inspiration to be found today, but we were especially inspired by the Blog Action Day post by our friend Amanda Q over at Fashion, Evolved. She shares some startling facts about the disparity between fashion CEOs and garment worker salaries from the Sweat Shop Watch website and has some strong feelings about flash/trash fashion vs. sustainable fashion.

Today marks Blog Action Day 2008 and the focus is on Poverty. Fashion Ethic has joined the conversation and would like to remind you that poverty exists in every country, all around the world and CAN BE prevented and ended.

No Room for Panic in a Fashionably Responsible Life

It's no secret that the past four weeks or so have been pretty scary here in the US, and even around the world, as far as our economy goes. At Fashion Ethic, we've been watching as consumers batten down the hatches and get ready for the storm. Frankly, we're battening a few hatches ourselves, as any good business is now doing.

But we're here to shed a little optimism in case you're bogged down by the doom-and-gloom-speak. The good news about a recession is that it is part of the cycle that IS economics. And while this may not turn out like the "normal" recessions we are familiar with, there is certainly hope to be had. Because any time we all stop spending, spending, spending, we are all able to slow down and make conscious decisions about the things we DO buy.

Conscious consuming in turn leads to better choices in products that are offered. Continue to you use your dollars to vote for what you believe in, and the companies that are making the right choices and have a vision for a better future will continue to grow. Those that may be acting in unethical or irresponsible ways - whether towards the environment, workers, or even your health and well-being - will be the ones to fall by the wayside.

So the choice is yours, readers. The next few years will be an era where we can really impact change - as long as we don't kowtow to the fear tactics that are causing panic and turmoil throughout our country.

Saturday was a fantastic day out in the blazing September sun for the Green Edmonds Festival.

Fashion Ethic was there with summer clearance items, Baggu bags, and more great accessories and we were delighted to meet customers new and old throughout the long hot day.

We were also happy to be in the company of customer favorites SPUN and Entangles and their respective designers, Sara Seumae and Julia Jacques. There were also new friends to be made, as over 50 vendors and organizations came together to spread the word about different ways of living sustainably.

August VOGUE India - Style Statement or Fashion Faux Pas?

The New York Times recently reported on a controversial fashion spread in VOGUE India's August issue which features high fashion luxury brand handbags and accessories worn by; according to whomever you believe; either "poor" or "average" Indian citizens.

Just one month after VOGUE Italy's much-vaunted July issue, VOGUE India finds itself facing criticism. At issue is whether it is ethical to portray luxury goods in situations that suggest severe poverty - is the jarring juxtaposition callous, considering that nearly half of the country's population lives on $1.25 a day or less*, or is it a practical statement about the growing wealth of India's middle and upper classes?

I haven't been able to see all the images from the photo spread, so it is difficult to judge one way or the other. From the shot above, I see nothing wrong with it. It appears to be showing fashion on "regular" people, which is normally favored by readers around the world. If the spread raises the issue of global poverty, all the better.

According to Priya Tana, editor at the one-year old VOGUE India, critics should know that

"fashion is no longer a rich man's privilege. Anyone can carry it off and make it look beautiful...you have to remember with fashion, you can't take it that seriously."

So whether you view the spread as aspirational or just asinine, at least the controversy has started a dialogue within the fashion industry about the ethics of marketing luxury goods in new markets where poverty is rampant.

Fashion Ethic Hearts Softlife at Etsy

From Daily Candy Seattle to Etsy, straight to our heart, we wanted to share the work of Softlife's Coco Howard, who can be found on Etsy. Her fantastical stuffed creations have individual personalities and many are made with recycled sweaters and whatnot, which makes her hip to the Fashionably Responsible tip.

We here at Fashion Ethic are partial to this "Cranky Cephalopod", maybe because her stripes match our tissue, or perhaps because she's described thusly:

"She is crabby, due to the crumby weather she is forced to put up with this summer in her home town, Seattle. Perhaps you can cheer her up... then again maybe not."

Sustainable KIDS Arrives at Fashion Ethic

Spoiler Alert: How the US Olympic Team made a Fashionably Responsible Opening Ceremony

We were so pleased to hear yesterday that the US Olympic team chose runner Lopez Lomong to carry the American flag and lead the team in the opening ceremonies of the Olympic games in China. Lomong was born in Sudan, and came to America as one of the "Lost Boys" after being kidnapped at age 6 and spending 10 years in a refugee camp.

What makes this an especially significant choice for the team is the fact that Olympic-host country China continues to financially support the Sudanese government even as the nation continues a nasty 'civil' war and allows mass violence against its own people in the Darfur region. Also to note is the fact that China recently denied visa entry to some non-competing US athletes who had pledged their support to Team Darfur, a group of athletes devoted to raising awareness of the situation in Darfur.

There is an excellent interview with Lopez Lomong at the TimesOnline site that I recommend reading (below). I have had the distinct pleasure of getting to know some refugees resettled here in the US and advocating for refugee issues through the IRC Seattle office, and Darfur is a cause close to my heart. I have never felt more American than when I see a new refugee arrive at the airport full of hope, or watch them light up simply at the sight of indoor running water in their new apartment. Their sunny attitudes in light of the tremendous hardships they have faced are nothing short of incredible.

So I praise the US Olympic team and its captains for making a Fashionably Responsible choice as to who would best represent them. Seeing Lopez Lomong carry the flag (just in photos!) has renewed my sense of pride in my country and I hope each and every athlete will hear us cheering tonight as we watch the (very) delayed telecast of the opening ceremony!

And as a total fashionista side note, look for the team to be decked out in Ralph Lauren from head to toe. No word on use of eco-friendly or sustainable fabrics, but at least this time they went with an American company! (sorry Roots.) More on the fashions can be found at ShopDiary.com

The new special issue from Harper's BAZAAR is out and it is glorious.

Modeled after its rare and pricey predecessors Paris VOGUE Collections and UK ELLE COLLECTIONS, the BAZAAR "Runway Report" offers tidbits from the Fall Fashion Weeks around the world as well as a visual recap of each notable runway show and quick hits on all the trends in apparel and beauty.

If you're conflicted over getting the best fashion coverage in a mag while trying to limit your glossy paper consumption, this is your answer. One mag: all the dish, all the inspiring photos and no celebrity interviews or book reviews to distract.

Our one wish would be that BAZAAR had published sans advertisements, as ELLE and VOGUE COllections does, but since the price tag is a measly $6.95, compared to UK ELLE Collections' $12.50 and Paris VOGUE Collections $30+, I suppose it is worth the sacrifice. Overall, this is succint coverage and is the perfect recap of the season.

We found it on the newsstand at Sea-Tac airport YESTERDAY (the 24th), quite to our pleasant surprise since it was slated to be released on the 29th. So look for Runway Report now and save yourself the cash and virgin-paper guilt you would have spent on all the other Fall mags!

NY Sweatshop Raided Today

Here at Fashion Ethic we pride ourselves in sourcing apparel from designers and lines who are committed to fair labor practices and 100% sweatshop-free. The vast majority of those designers use US-based manufacturers that they visit to ensure workers are being treated fairly, and some designers even keep production in house, creating small quantities to ensure quality and fair treatment.

So it saddens us to report today that Women's Wear Daily is tracking a story of alleged sweatshop violations at a factory based here in America. This is a larger New York factory with no relation to any of the apparel lines we carry, but does apparently manufacture products for some very well known clothing chains that we (and most Americans) do respect.

Alleged violations include underpaying workers in minimum and overtime wages. While workers worked 12 hour days 6-7 days a week, they were told to fill out two time cards a week so that none would show more than 40 hours. Additionally, it appears they coached workers on how to avoid suspicion from labor investigators.

Taking advantage of workers should not be accepted anywhere in this day and age, least of all here in America, where we pride ourselves on equality and our abilties to work hard to better ourselves.

Fashion Ethic was founded on the principle of providing clothing that you can feel good about, in hopes that a higher standard of responsibility will not only dominate the fashion industry but leave absolutely no room for these types of abuses. We call on all retailers, designers, and clothing lines to keep careful watch over clothing manufacturing - and for shoppers and consumers to ask the hard questions. If we all make Fashionably Responsible choices, we really will make a difference.

Fake Karl's Guide to Life

So it may not have much to do with ethical fashion, but here at Fashion Ethic, we take the FASHION part just as seriously as the ETHIC. And any fashionista worth her LBD knows that Karl rules the roost.

We recently wrote about Karl Lagerfeld (head designer of Chanel, among his many other endeavors) and his role in promoting bicycle safety in France. Now we have stumbled upon a devious little blog called "Karl Lagerfeld's Guide to Life" at www.FakeKarl.blogspot.com and we are loving just about every second of it - especially days like today when Karl's friend 'Anna Wintour' blogged about Jersey.

We'll let you discover this gem for yourself, but trust us - if you've got one eye on the catwalk and another eye on reality and practicality, this little satirical fashion site will be one you'll want in your reader...you can even get the T-shirt (right).

Fashionably Responsible Tidbits from AUG 08 VOGUE

The glorious summer weather has finally arrived for the long haul (okay - a month and a half) here in Seattle. So it was time for my favorite summertime activity: 30 minutes in the sun with the brand new August issue of VOGUE magazine. This is the precursor, the training exercise, shall we say, for next month's behemoth September issue.

I am happy to report that this month's VOGUE has several items of note in the world of ethical fashion.

Enjoy Joan Juliet Buck's profile of Mia Farrow, a style icon who has accomplished much in the battle to make the crises in Darfur, Chad, and Central African Republic more newsworthy and high profile. Acknowledging horrors in the world and trying to stop them is an important part of keeping beauty alive.

And be inspired by Sloan Barnett (nee Lindemann), who has taken steps toward a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle even while staying on trend in her social strata and working on her upcoming guide "Green Goes with Everything," which will be published by Atria in September. We do have to slightly disagree with her assessment of organic fashion, as we here at Fashion Ethic feel there is quite an abundance of "poised" and "chic" organic and responsible fashion available...and more designers coming to it every day!

Other tidbits include VOGUE Editor Tonne Goodman's choice of a sustainable shopping bag and favoring "tees with eco-conscious slogans" and a cover story on the lovely Kate Moss, who between reproducing true vintage fashion for the masses and wishing for a private jet, probably isn't considered too eco-friendly by most "greenies". But as a style icon and mother, we think she's pretty special anyway. Everyone has their own shade of green!

Get Your Reusing Kicks by Boxing...

We took delivery of some really cute new dresses from Prairie Underground the other day (more on those dresses later!) and were pleased to find a notice about the box they were sent in (a tres glamourous dairy box).

It said:

"Do you recognize this box? Beginning with out 3/30 shipments we have begun to use quality, clean, second use boxes for the majority of our orders. This meams a less expensive handling charge for you and a greener world for everyone."

Now, we already knew how 'Fashionably Responsible' Prairie Underground was, (because we adore them!) and at Fashion Ethic we make it standard practice to re-use shipping materials and use cradle-to-cradle certified USPS shipping materials. But when we saw another blog post about reusing cardboard boxes, we felt compelled to share the info with all of you, our dear friends.

Boxes are notoriously hard to procure when moving, cleaning out the garage, or shipping packages. (There are only so many household items that fit into a box that held 6 bottles of Absolut from the liquor store, correct?) But instead of buying new boxes, it is now becoming easier to locate the right size used box; which is great because it prevents new boxes from being made (saving the trees and energy used in production) while cutting down on waste of the old boxes.

Cheryl Janis over at PlanetPinkNGreen.com found a great site, UsedCardboardBoxes.com, which makes used cardboard boxes available to all at low prices, and gives money to help plant new trees in the process.

Another option when you are in need of multiple boxes would be to search Craigslist or Freecycle website listings in your area. And of course, when you finish moving it's fabulous to be able to post on these sites and have someone else come pick up those boxes to keep the cycle moving. (That is, if you are so lucky as to unpack all those boxes once you move :) ).

July VOGUE Italia...the wait is (almost) over

For those of you in the States awaiting the July issue of VOGUE Italia, it seems the wait is nearly over. Fashionista.com has just begun scanning pages, which would lead us to believe it has hit newsstands in NYC. Fashion Ethic, however, is on the West Coast, and just returned from the local Barnes and Noble empty-handed. (Linda Evangelista continues to taunt from the June issue and there is "no date" for delivery said Customer Service)

If you're not quite sure what the hype is about, this July issue has been hotly anticipated ever since word broke that the entire issue would be shot by photographer Steven Meisel, using only black models as a commentary on the current dearth of diversity in high fashion editorials and catwalk.

Our own American VOGUE touched on the topic this month, with an article entitled "Is Fashion Racist," accompanied by the most beautiful shots of soon-to-be-supers Chanel Iman, Jourdan Dunn, and Arlenis Sosa (pictured here). The good news is that the industry is talking and the future looks bright for "a more diverse cast," says VOGUE.

Here's hoping that designers, retailers, and show casting directors will take note of the hot demand for the July issue of VOGUE Italia (some reports say newsstands have already sold out with pre-orders in NYC), which indicates that the public is more than ready to see greater diversity in fashion. It's the Fashionably Responsible thing to do, after all!
